Mechanical Equipment Upgrade – Critical Services

Bridgeford Group recently completed the complex services designs for the major upgrade of the mechanical systems at the Emergency Services Telecommunication Authority 000 Call Centre, Mt Helen Technology Park (Federation University). The building is owned by Federation University, and is occupied by ESTA.

Bridgeford Group commenced the projected with a concept feasibility, to enable Federation University and ESTA to further understand the costs, barriers and design options required for the proposed refurbishment. The options assessed included:
• Option 1: like for like VRV replacement – easiest option from an engineering and lowest capital cost
• Option 2: Industry standard chiller and boiler retrofit – safe option still used across entire industry
• Option 3: Best practice electrification upgrade using heat pumps – innovative design with higher level of expertise required

Through Bridgeford Group’s sustainability and design analysis, Option 3 was selected as it provided the following:
• No requirement to provision site with natural gas infrastructure to support boilers
• Provided the ability to offset energy consumption with green energy, supporting future sustainability goals
• Addressed existing occupant complaints of “overcooling”
• High part load operating efficiency compared to VRV systems

Following this Bridgeford Group was engaged for the design development, whereby careful consideration and innovations were adopted to ensure that the site would remain 100% operational during the proposed works.
